2009/10 Smyrna Christian School Frequently Asked Questions

When does school start?

August 23, 2010

Is bus transportation available?

Yes, space is limited.

What if I am going to be a few days late on my payment, am I still assessed a late fee.

We will attempt to work with parents as far as is possible. However, it is your responsibility to see us, not for us to chase you down. If you have not requested a "payment modification" form and filled it out and had it signed, you will be charged as stated in the handbook.

My child does not like Gym Class. Does he/she have to take the class or can he/she sit and watch?

Unless there is a medically verified reason for not taking the class, or an administrative reason for excusing your student for a specific issue, all students must take the class with no exception. (Failure to wear the proper gym uniform will result in a reduction in the student's grade.)

Can't I vary a little bit from the dress code?

NO! The School Board has decided that this will be a uniform school and that we must enforce the dress code.

If my child excels, is it possible for him to move up a grade?

Student excellence is what we strive for. Just about every year we have had students who have proven by maturity and academics that they belong in a higher level of challenge. When that appears to be the case we will have a conference with the parents, possibly do some optional testing and then interview the child in the presence of the parents about the possibility of same year advancement. There are some unique potential problems with such moves and it is critical that all parts of the equation are in total agreement.

How can my child reduce the amount of homework being brought home?

A large part of homework involves correcting errors from classroom assignments. Many times we find students falling behind in these corrections and consequently before long they are overloaded in work at home. Demand that your child complete all corrections EVERY night. Do not accept that they forgot them or they accidentally left them at school or that the dog ate them, etc. Once an excuse is acceptable, more excuses will be invented.

Why does the school have detention? [When needed]

We would prefer to never have detention; however, at times there needs to be a method of encouragement that will get the student and parent's attention. Some of the things requiring detention are: excessive tardiness, disciplinary issues and remedial academic work.

Why does SCS have an absolute no "public displays of affection" (physical and verbal) rule?

There is an appropriate time (age) and place (not here) for displays of affection. This is a very sensitive issue and is not part of what students are here to accomplish. Our function is as a Christian academic institution and not as a monitor for student's love relationships. These are best monitored by parents.

Why can't my student have a cell phone or other electronic device in possession while in school?

There are a number of issues related to this question which involve disruption of student life, cheating, improper communications, etc. Likewise, camera functions carry other unique problems. We best avoid difficulties by banning these items. They are not necessary for an excellent education. We will confiscate these articles.
